I had noticed and now have decided to share mustaches with the blog world before anyone jumps on the bandwagon!! I’m quite keen on the Fu Manchu!!
Chevron
A thick and wide mustache, usually worn long to cover the top border of the upper lip.
Dali
A narrow mustache with long points bent or curved steeply upward. Named for artist Salvador Dali.
English
A narrow divided mustache that begins at the middle of the upper lip, with long whiskers pulled to either side of the center. The areas beyond the corners of the mouth are typically shaved.
Fu manchu
A mustache that begins on the upper lip and whose whiskers are grown very long to extend down each side of the mouth down to the to jaw. The areas just past the corners of the mouth are shaven, thus differentiating this style from the “horseshoe” (see below).
Handlebar
A handlebar mustache can be worn large or small (”petit handlebar”); it is characterized by the fact that it is bushy and must be worn long enough to curl the ends upward, which is usually achieved with styling wax.
Horseshoe
A full moustache with vertical extensions grown on the corners of the lips and down the sides of the mouth to the jawline, resembling an upside-down horseshoe. The whiskers grown along the sides of the mouth in the horseshoe are sometimes referred to as “pipes.” Not to be confused with the “fu manchu” which is grown long from the upper lip only– the sides remain shaven in the fu manchu.
Imperial
A large mustache growing from both the upper lip and cheeks, whiskers from the cheeks are styled pointing upward.
Lampshade
A mustache similar to the “painter’s brush,” but with corners angled slightly, resembling the shape of a lampshade.
Mouthbrow
See “pencil.”
Painter’s brush
A thick mustache covering the width of the mouth, usually worn short, with slightly rounded corners.
Pencil
A thin, narrow, closely clipped mustache that outlines the upper lip. Pencil style mustaches can be trimmed in different manners (see below). Also sometimes called a “mouthbrow.”
Pyramidal
A general name for mustaches shaped narrow on top and wide on the bottom, like a pyramid. Pyramidal mustaches can be shaped in a variety of ways, as shown below.
Toothbrush
A thick mustache, shaved to be about an inch wide in the center.
Walrus
A large, bushy, droopy mustache that hangs down over the lips, often entirely covering the mouth.
‘TUPAC’
Tupac a young Train Surfer, hangs from the side of a train, practicing his moves on the way to school. South Africa, 2007.
‘SEVEN‘
Seven performs a trick called 'Graveling' which basically involves dancing along the moving gravel at 45 mph to create the illusion of running at the same speed as the train.
‘BAPTISTA‘
Baptista, a young Train Surfer, performs a 20/20 - walking hand over hand along the side of the train while in full motion. South Africa, 2007.

Pop’Africana was started in New York City, in Feburary 2008 by a group of friends from various areas of artistic expertise who were interested in a creating a new African publication that was of high standard that would serve as the Africana global book of style. “Pop” - because Pop’Africana is in the movement of the new African. Pop’Africana was created with the stylish individualist in mind. Pop’Africana is not a trendy magazine. Look to it for innovation and style.

Oroma Elewa is the founder and Editor of Pop’Africana magazine. She is also a photographer and occasionally contributes to the editorial pages of the magazine. Oroma shares her time between New York City and Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She loves Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where she finds that time slows down and the tranquility of the coastal city feeds her creativity. She plans on spending time in many African cities and hopes that Pop’Africana takes her all over Africa . She has a background in fashion design and plans on pursing media arts and communications.

Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, a former bio-mechanical engineer from Pittsburg, has put a new record, and done a bit of a Radiohead by giving it away for whatever you want to pay. It would be kinda tricky to actually put it out since Girl Talk’s music is essentially 15 samples per song, none licenced and all reasonably well known. His is a kinda Diplo style thing where he lines up some B-More or krunked out filth over something entirely incongrouous, like a piece of 90s alt rock, or some pop hit (Come On Eileen anyone?).
The first album I heard of his was the supreme Night Ripper, which was actually available in the peerless Rounder Records for a couple of weeks. I totally wore that out playing it, so when a CDR with Girl Talk scrawled on it in biro plopped into my lap, I dropped it into my player immediately, and….. WOW. So much filthier, more Baltimore, and yet so much delicious pop in there too. Amazing. Its not gonna cost you anything - get over to ILLEGAL ART (the label that puts Girl Talk out) and download a paaaaaarrrrtaaaaaayyyy.

Across the street in the bedrock of inspiration that is Blaker street, you find many a colourful house, lots of torn garbage bags molested by seagulls and ticket inspectors prowling around every corner! But today I wanted to go into town because my internet is down how-now-brown-frau-cow… but also i remembered i needed to return my mates honey DVD (u know Jessica i’d-give-my-right-leg-to-be-ur-boyfriend Alba, yeah that one) and Jack Penate CD.
So i clean my manor and head to the library to book some much needed Internet time and also buy some blue tack for my wall… stop off to return the dutty goods and get seduced in for a cup of tea which i apologize for not even drinking!!…. instead i stumble across a tiny little ickle firecracker of an illustrator called ‘Isabel Greenberg’… first i think challenge to the Gurn Boy’s turf but then i warm to the pint sized lady’s illustrations… peep her out… here are a tasty portion of some of her images but follow the link down the rabbit hole and if u find that white rabbit smack the shit of of that fucker and tell him he owes me money….
Her work reminds me of the graphic illustrator Joe Sacco who illustrated ‘ Palestine’ and Marjane Satrapi ‘Persepolis’…

Congrats to the ATG posse who hosted their first party down at Corsica Studios in Elephant & Castle last Friday night. The night was a total banger with sets from Caspa, Reso, Klose1, Rattus Rattus, Dirty Rotten DJ’s, Alex Brooks, Alpha Sounds an Ray Stanley and the venue looked crisp with loads of spray nozzle art and an x-rated hotdog by Jimi which creased me. Props to Lowell for having an after party up in Dollis all day Saturday, I had a nice nap in the garden an missed my mega train but all in all it was a sick weekend.
PS. Extra props go out to the cabbie we had on the way to the after party, Ive never met a more open minded transport employee.

In the beginning…
Early in 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company. The running shoe phenomenon that has fueled their sales in previous years was slowly dying and they needed a way to revitalize and reinvent themselves in order to appeal to another segment of the market. At the same time, rookie player Michael Jordan was already endorsing several products, but Nike hoped that his appeal would generate sales. Jordan, though, had other ideas. He had always preferred Adidas or the Converse shoes endorsed by North Carolina Coach, Dean Smith, and hoped to sign on with either company. Converse, with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson on board as spokesmen, were not interested in offering a better deal than Nike, and Adidas wasn’t interested at all at the time; perhaps due to Kathe Dassler’s death the same year. While Jordan, himself, did not initially see the significance of Nike’s offer, his agent, David Falk, saw a golden opportunity in Nike’s offer to create a new line of shoes called “Air Jordans.” and urged him to give Nike a chance.
The Shoes Changed the World
Air Jordan shoes have consistently been among the best selling basketball shoes since their creation in 1985. The Jordan brand is a household name and people of all ages and social strata line up eagerly for the release of the latest model. Some of this success can be attributed to the fact that the shoes, from the Jordan III to the most recent model, have always started with their namesake, Michael Jordan. The designers take his ideas, hobbies, and life into account and incorporate these feelings into the shoes. A number of Jordans have been designed after Jordan’s cars and some of the more recent models, like the Jordan XXI (Jordan 21) on the way, some wonder when the Air Jordan line will be retired while others speculate that, in honor of the man, the last Air Jordan will be the Jordan XXIII (Jordan 23). No matter what happens to the signature Air Jordan line, it’s a good bet that the brand and its tradition of quality, high-fashion basketball and athletic shoes will continue long after Air Jordans have retired.
